Injured Wild Raptors and Rehabilitation

The staff and volunteers at Beamish Wild are regularly called upon to help in the rescue of birds of prey that are in distress or injured. We manage to safely capture many of these birds and nurse them back to health. We sometimes use falconry techniques and training methods to exercise and manage the birds in captivity before they are released back into the wild. Birds that do not manage to gain full fitness to successfully survive in the wild become permanent residents at the conservation centre. Some of these birds become part of our display team to provide further education to our visitors.

Here at the Beamish Wild Birds of Prey Conservation Centre in County Durham we have a fully equipped avian medical facility. The facility is probably more equipped than most veterinary surgeries in terms of what we can deal with for injured birds of prey. Our resident vet provides us with critical care management, with the back up of having a full invasive surgery and intensive health care facility close-by.

The presence of a highly equipped and specialised veterinary facility on-site is another reason why we believe Beamish Wild Birds of Prey Conservation Centre is so well-suited to providing a place of recovery for injured birds.
