Beamish Wild in County Durham welcomes their 9 newest arrivals to the Birds of Prey Conservation Centre. The largest of the new arrivals is 6 year old Hill’s, a Griffon Vulture which is the second largest vulture species in the world. With her amazing 10ft wingspan and weighing a considerable 28 pounds she is a welcomed addition to the birds family at Beamish Wild. Trainer Geoff will have his hands full getting her ready for next spring’s flight demonstrations, and so far she is taking well to her new surroundings and friends. Hills will be the only griffon vulture in the north east of England and one of only 4 in the country. Other arrivals at the centre include Tilley the Ural Owl, Zeus the white backed Vulture, Bertie the Turkey Vulture, Gizmo and Mogwi the white faced southern scops, Billy and Lilly the abyssinian Owls and Jess the red kite. The new arrivals will be taking part in the daily flight demonstrations at the centre whilst also working closely with local schools to help provide educational and interactive days to work along with the curriculum. The aim is to help children learn and understand more about each species and what they can do to help protect them.
